Captain Tennant recalled:

I had moved down to B gun deck which was a better place to enter the water, then the sea came up rapidly to meet me. I let it come; there was nothing else I could do. My ship turned right over on me, and I was at once drawn into the blackness of her death and taken far down on her turbulent descent to the bottom. I wondered whether I should take one deep swallow in an effort to hasten my end. But I held on and saw the black change to dark green, then to light green as I swiftly rose again above my ship that had so miraculously allowed me to live. When he surfaced he heard a voice calling, ‘Here you are, sir.’ Men who had at once recognized him were leaning from the edge of a Carley float and dragged him on board.
